Ptosis is a condition where the muscles of the upper eyelid lose their elasticity, causing abnormal drooping due to paralysis of defective development of the muscle called levator palpebrae superioris (LPS). It is primarily a disease of eyelid muscle LPS. This muscle has function of raising eyelid normally and due to weakness/paralysis it is unable to keep eyelid at desired upper level. Thus we see drooping eyelids and person suffering cannot keep up with normal activity. Patients of diabetes, stroke, myasthenia gravis or cancer are at risk of developing ptosis.
